"The Patriot" was filmed in 2000 and was released on June 28, 2000. It received generally positive reviews from critics and was a success at the box office. It won the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Makeup and lost the award for Best Visual Effects during the 72nd Academy Awards. The film also won other awards such as The Saturn Award for Best Action/Adventure/Thriller Film, The CFCA Award for Best Film Editing and The MTV Movie Award for Most Desirable Male (Mel Gibson). The Patriot was released on DVD in Region 1 on October 20, 2001. The DVD was released in both a limited edition and a single disc edition sporting a 64-page booklet.In February 2004, Warner Home Video released the film on VHS and made it available exclusively to Blockbuster Video customers until March 2004. In October 2005, it was re-released onto VHS for rental to Blockbuster Video customers. In April 2007, the film was released for rental to Verizon FiOS customers who pay an extra fee of $3 or more per month for FiOS Internet service. In October 2010, the film was released on Blu-ray for a rental to Blockbuster Video customers. In November 2011, the film was released for rental to Redbox customers.On January 10, 2012, a "10th Anniversary Edition" DVD was released by Warner Bros. featuring a commentary by director Roland Emmerich and actor Mel Gibson, eight deleted scenes with optional commentary from Emmerich and Gibson among other things. The DVD also has an Ultraviolet Digital Copy of the movie for PC/Mac, PS3 or Xbox 360 users to rent/purchase digitally. During its first month of release it sold about 63,000 units in North America.
